Grumpy Old Punk Shaved Ice

I'm being purposely generous to get these folks off to a good start.  This shaved ice truck in our area just opened and we stopped in for a cool bite.  The name is a grabber and it looks like they will do more with the premise.  It's your basic shaved ice truck with all the usual flavors, served in a styrofoam cup so it's easy to manage.  They also have some fortified "tea blocks" with a dose of vitamin C or other health aids.  They are on the corner where Dowdell turns toward Kuykendahl.  Some of the local shaved ice places have closed recently so they are providing a new option.  Nice, unfussy folks.  We wish them well.

Taco Chile in Sunoco at Hufsmith and Kuykendahl

This station has rebranded and is now a Sunoco.  The food offering is now called Taco Chile.  I stopped in to see what's different.

It is in fact different from Laredo Taco Company.  But pretty much a step back.  They still warm the tortillas fresh on the grill and they have a nice char on them.  I got barbacoa and alhambre (sausage).  The tacos were OK, the beans were OK, the rice had not much flavor.  One thing that did stand out was the salsa--the red salsa is flaming hot, I could only handle a few drops on my tacos, so if you are wanting really hot salsa it could be worth it.

The taco business is separate from the gas station.  You pay for the food at the food counter, and drinks and anything else at the register.  The station is not kept up as well as the Stripes was.  The bathrooms were not real clean and out of towels, and one of the drink machines was out of ice.  Not terrible but you can do better.
