La Capital M.

This restaurant is inside the new Valero station. I stopped in and picked up a fish torta, fries and a drink.

The torta is not cheap ($14) but the portion is massive. Three tilapia filets on the sandwich. It would feed three pretty easily. The sandwich came with lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado and a little jalapeno. Decent flavor, very filling. The fries were cooked just right, nice and crisp.

There are lots of tempting items on the menu. They do burgers as well as Mexican lunch plates.
At lunchtime it looks like everything is cooked to order on the flat top.

The convenience store is very plain, hardly any signage, but it's very clean. The bathrooms were in good shape. The aisles are wide and smooth. I would recommend it to people using mobility devices, except that the door has no push button opener. If they had installed a sliding door it would be perfect.

Service is friendly but order in Spanish if you can. It's a nice addition to this area.

Bazaar Istanbul

This Middle Eastern grocery store is operating a coffee and dessert place inside. We stopped in the other day to have a look. They have lots of appetizing looking baked goods (homemade, or samples? The baked goods looked a whole lot like the frozen products available), ice cream treats and coffees. You can get a Turkish coffee there, I saw a customer with one. Thursday afternoon may not have been the best time to try it--the server wasn't real familiar with what was available. We got a pistachio and Dubai chocoloate ice cream cone and a strawberry shake. It was supposed to be a strawberry fresa made with yogurt but they didn't have the yogurt. I do have to say that the ice cream was excellent. I have never had Dubai chocolate on its own, but it did seem to level up the ice cream. I would get it again. The store is clean and well stocked, lots of Middle Eastern goodies. I'm rounding up to a four star.

Taqueria La Incomparable Update

Tacqueria la Incomparable has been expanding its presence in the area recently. They opened a new food truck at this location (a different truck, originally on Highway 6, had been here for a couple of years). It's housed in a converted school bus. I stopped in the other day to see if it had improved.

Overall I would say yes, it has. The new truck does not do trompo, but it does have a broader menu. I got a carnitas torta, nopales asado as a side, and a jamaica agua fresca.

The torta is done like a panini, in a sandwich press. The carnitas meat was flavorful and tender. There were a few crispy bits that could be bacon, or perhaps bark on a slow-cooked pork shoulder. Either way they added a nice texture to the sandwich.

I have always been curious about nopales asados, and finally decided to give them a try. The server, in a very friendly way, made sure that an obvious gringo like me knew what I was ordering (prickly pear cactus, to white folks). The grilled onions were very tasty and I added them to the sandwich. The nopales had that classic sour-sharp flavor but were not overpowering, I liked them. The jamaica was a good representation, tasty and a generous amount.

The truck still has some of the drawbacks of the previous ones. They did not have the papas al horno listed on the truck. They list desserts now, and while I didn't order one there is evidence that they have them. There is no real menu and prices are not displayed. But service was friendly and reasonably fast. I liked my food better than last time, it seems they are headed in the right direction.

Rooster's Run

Rooster's Run is a "ghost kitchen" operating out of Willie's Icehouse. It's a delivery-only place serving chicken sandwiches, tenders and wings. The only side is fries. We got 10 chicken wings with Backyard BBQ and Tangy Honey Garlic sauce, and a chicken sandwich with ranch sauce, two sides of fries and drinks.

The sauces are shown on the website as though they are dipping sauces, but our wings came pre-sauced. I could tell the difference between the sauces, but only just. Most of the wings were the two-bone portion, rather than the drumettes. The texture was decent, skin just slightly chewy but fine, but the flavor was not distinct. The sandwich had a decent spice kick but that's about it, not much other flavor.

The fries were specifically disappointing. On the menu they are described as "seasoned fries". When I think of seasoned fries I think of the ones you get at Chili's, or Red Robin, or Wing Stop. These were just ordinary lightly salted fries, which suffered in the ride in the bag as fries always do. The drinks were fine.

With tip and tax the meals came out to over $20 apiece, and it's just not worth it for the quality. Wing Stop, Big City Wings, and several others do wings better.
